The Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is escalating rapidly, with the current situation now classified as the largest in the country's history.

According to the latest data from the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing reports from the World Health Organization (WHO), as of July 30, there have been 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths in the DRC. This surge marks a significant milestone, as the current epidemic has now surpassed the scale of the 2018-2020 outbreak, which saw 3,317 confirmed cases.

The outbreak is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. The WHO reports that the infection has spread across 49 health zones within the Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo provinces. Containment efforts are severely hampered by regional security challenges, which limit access to healthcare facilities and complicate epidemiological surveillance and response measures.

The WHO initially declared the Bundibugyo-related Ebola epidemic a public health emergency of international concern in May. The organization is also closely monitoring potential cross-border transmission risks, particularly concerning Uganda. Experts emphasize that the combination of ongoing armed conflict, limited access to medical services, and gaps in epidemiological monitoring significantly increases the risk of further viral spread.

Ebola virus disease is a severe, often fatal illness in humans, characterized by sudden onset of fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and symptoms of impaired kidney and liver function. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission, primarily through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected people.
