Two drivers who organized an illegal street race on the Baku–Shamakhi highway have been detained by police officers. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Main State Traffic Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) released an official statement regarding the incident.
The investigation was launched immediately following the circulation of footage on social media platforms. Analysis revealed that on January 23, at the 14th kilometer of the Baku–Shamakhi road, a driver identified as X. Humbatov, operating a Chevrolet Cobalt (90-YD-792), engaged in a high-speed race with R. Gadimov, who was driving another vehicle of the same make (90-YH-208). The unauthorized competition created a significant and real danger for other road users and participants in the vicinity.
Officers from the Road Patrol Service of the Main State Traffic Police Department successfully intercepted both drivers and took appropriate legal actions in accordance with the requirements of Azerbaijani legislation. The department issued a stern warning to all motorists, emphasizing that street racing and irresponsible behavior on public roads can lead to severe and irreversible consequences. Officials reiterated that adhering to traffic regulations is the direct responsibility of every driver, and strict legal measures will continue to be applied against any actions that threaten public safety in Azerbaijan.
In recent years, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has intensified its monitoring of highways across Azerbaijan to combat reckless driving and illegal racing. The integration of advanced surveillance technology and increased patrol presence aims to reduce traffic accidents and ensure the safety of the country's transport corridors. Under Azerbaijani law, such violations can result in heavy fines, suspension of driving privileges, or administrative detention, depending on the severity of the risk posed to the public.
