Azerbaijani border guards have thwarted an attempt to smuggle nearly 20 kilograms of narcotics and a large quantity of psychotropic pills from Iran into Azerbaijan.

The State Border Service (SBS) informed the Operative Information Center-OMM that the operation was conducted within the service area of the "Horadiz" border detachment. During the search and operational measures, officers seized 19.665 kilograms of marijuana along with 20,050 various synthetic pills, including 19,950 Methadone M-40 tablets, 50 Gelofen 400, and 50 Tedaphen 400 tablets. Investigative and operational measures into the fact are currently ongoing.

Azerbaijan's southern borders are frequently targeted by drug trafficking syndicates attempting to use the country as a transit route for the shipment of narcotics from Afghanistan and Iran toward European markets. In response, the State Border Service and other law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan have intensified surveillance and technical capabilities along the state borders to combat the illegal circulation of narcotics and psychotropic substances. The "Horadiz" border detachment remains a critical outpost in securing the frontier and preventing cross-border crime.
