The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally protested the content of a document recently published by the European Union concerning Türkiye. The ministry emphasized that the provisions within the EU's "Common Understanding" document lack a strategic and equitable approach toward Ankara.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, MFA spokesperson Oncu Keceli stated that the EU's failure to acknowledge Türkiye's candidate status demonstrates the bloc's difficulty in formulating a vision for a shared future. Keceli highlighted that the timing of the document's release, immediately following the NATO Summit in Ankara, appears intended to overshadow Türkiye's pivotal role within the alliance.

The Turkish MFA also criticized the document's stance on the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus issues. The ministry official urged the EU to abandon its unilateral position on these matters and adopt a more objective approach. Keceli further noted that the primary obstacle to resolving the Cyprus issue remains the Greek Cypriot side, which rejected the UN plan in 2004 and failed to demonstrate a constructive position during the 2017 Cyprus Conference.

Relations between Türkiye and the European Union have historically been complex, characterized by ongoing negotiations regarding Türkiye's accession status, regional security cooperation, and geopolitical disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean. The EU often issues reports evaluating Türkiye's progress on reforms and alignment with EU standards, which Ankara frequently critiques for being politically motivated rather than based on objective criteria.
