US President Donald Trump has proposed renaming Lake Ontario, citing ongoing trade disputes with Canada.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Trump stated on his social media account that his administration is seriously considering renaming the body of water, which sits between the US state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario, to "Lake America."
President Trump linked this initiative to his concerns regarding the future of trade relations with Canada. This statement arrives at a time of heightened trade friction between the two North American neighbors. Following the breakdown of negotiations last week, President Trump announced that starting next year, customs duties on automobiles, trucks, auto parts, and steel products imported from Canada will be increased to 50 percent.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has indicated that Ottawa will implement reciprocal measures to protect the country's workers, farmers, and businesses against Washington's new tariffs. The political tension has extended to regional leadership as well, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford harshly criticizing the US tariff decision, to which President Trump responded by labeling Ford's comments as "arrogant." Furthermore, the US President accused Prime Minister Carney of manipulating the status of the French language in Canada and engaging in political maneuvering regarding Quebec.
