US President Donald Trump is considering the construction of a dedicated helipad near the White House to facilitate presidential travel while protecting the historic grounds.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the initiative is part of a broader series of renovations and infrastructure upgrades planned for the executive mansion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The move is specifically intended to prevent damage to the South Lawn caused by the new presidential helicopter, the VH-92A Patriot. Compared to the previously used VH-3D Sea King, the VH-92A features more powerful engines and exhaust systems that can scorch the grass and damage the soil. Although the new model has been available for presidential flights since 2024, it has avoided landing on the South Lawn to preserve the turf. As modification attempts to make the VH-92A safe for grass landings have been unsuccessful, the older Sea King model is now expected to remain in service until at least 2027.

Beyond aviation infrastructure, US President Donald Trump has proposed significant architectural changes to the residence. These plans include the construction of a ballroom in the East Wing valued at over $200 million, as well as refurbishing the Rose Garden with new turf and parquet flooring suitable for dancing. Additionally, several rooms within the presidential residence are being redesigned to meet the current administration's requirements. Such renovations to the White House, which serves as both a global symbol of the American presidency and a National Historic Landmark, typically involve coordination with the National Park Service to balance modern functional needs with historical preservation.
