The United States is launching a new peace initiative aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing sources from the Sudan Tribune, that US diplomats are currently working on a proposal within the Peace Council framework to halt the confrontation in the African nation.
According to diplomats familiar with the matter, the strategy focuses on establishing an urgent humanitarian ceasefire by March, securing a permanent cessation of hostilities, and implementing long-awaited military and security reforms. A key condition of the proposal involves the isolation of extremist elements, particularly Islamist groups, from Sudan's military and political landscape. The plan has reportedly gained support from Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, following coordination efforts by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio with his regional counterparts last week.
The conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, Washington has intensified diplomatic pressure to stabilize the region and prevent further displacement. This latest initiative reflects a broader international effort to restore civilian rule and ensure regional security in the Horn of Africa, a priority for both the United States and its Middle Eastern allies.
