Slovakia is prepared to assist in strengthening relations between the European Union (EU) and Azerbaijan, according to Slovak President Peter Pellegrini.
As reported by the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Pellegrini stated in an interview with the "AnewZ" television channel that Slovakia intends to encourage its EU counterparts to view Azerbaijan as an equal partner rather than adopting a critical or patronizing stance.
"Slovakia respects its partners. We can act as a kind of 'advocate' for Azerbaijan among European countries in a positive sense. Where support is needed, or if the EU makes any decisions regarding Azerbaijan, you can rely on us," Pellegrini emphasized.
The Slovak President expressed his approval of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to Baku, which took place in early July. He suggested that such high-level diplomatic engagements serve as a clear signal to Brussels regarding the strategic necessity of fostering robust, cooperative relations with Azerbaijan.
"I believe officials in Brussels now understand that they must engage in dialogue and act as partners to Azerbaijan. I think this is the future of our relations, and Slovakia will be very useful in this process," Pellegrini added.
The European Union and Azerbaijan have been actively deepening their cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. The 2022 Memorandum of Understanding on a Strategic Partnership in the Field of Energy between the EU and Azerbaijan, signed in Baku, serves as a cornerstone for this relationship, highlighting Azerbaijan's critical role in ensuring European energy security through the Southern Gas Corridor.
