Azerbaijan is set to introduce 18 distinct state control measures within the fisheries sector, according to a new draft law currently under review by the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) Committee on Agrarian Policy. These regulations are designed to enhance the management of aquatic bioresources and curb illegal fishing activities across the country.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the proposed legislation empowers designated state authorities to conduct comprehensive oversight. This includes monitoring fishing vessels, verifying catch quotas, and ensuring that aquatic products entering commercial markets are accompanied by proper documentation regarding their origin, species, and quantity. Furthermore, the authorities will be authorized to inspect aquaculture facilities, manage technical requirements for fishing infrastructure, and monitor the environmental impact of fishing activities on water quality.

The draft law also grants state inspectors the authority to use specialized equipment, uniforms, and service weapons when necessary to enforce compliance. Additionally, the regulatory body will have the right to acquire or lease vehicles and vessels to patrol the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea and internal water basins. This legislative initiative reflects Azerbaijan's broader commitment to sustainable environmental management and the protection of its aquatic ecosystems, ensuring that both commercial and recreational fishing practices adhere to strict national standards.
