A Russian military aircraft briefly entered South Korea's Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) near the country's airspace, according to reports.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Yonhap news agency, that South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff issued an official statement regarding the incident.
According to the statement, the Russian aircraft entered the KADIZ in the eastern direction of the country and departed shortly thereafter. South Korean authorities confirmed that the aircraft did not violate the nation's sovereign airspace. However, as a precautionary security measure, the South Korean Air Force scrambled fighter jets to the area.
It should be noted that an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) does not have a strictly defined status under international law and is established unilaterally by states. While an ADIZ is not considered sovereign airspace, the entry of military aircraft into these zones is often viewed as a potential security concern and can trigger military responses from the monitoring nation.
