In accordance with the agreement reached during the meeting between the Presidents of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation in Dushanbe on October 9, 2025, the parties have agreed on the appropriate resolution of issues arising from the crash of an Embraer 190 aircraft belonging to Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL). The settlement includes the payment of compensation regarding the incident, which occurred on December 25, 2024, near the city of Aktau due to the involuntary activation of an air defense system in the airspace of the Russian Federation.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that this was stated in a joint statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. The statement emphasized that the steps taken demonstrate the joint efforts of both parties toward the further development of beneficial cooperation within the framework of allied interaction.
"We are confident that the sustainable development of Azerbaijan-Russia relations, based on mutual respect, trust, and consideration of each other's interests, will continue to contribute to the strengthening of good-neighborly relations and the expansion of cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries. We once again express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the plane crash and share the pain of this irreparable loss with everyone affected by the tragedy," the statement noted.
The resolution of this incident marks a significant diplomatic milestone in the bilateral relations between Baku and Moscow. Azerbaijan and Russia maintain a strategic partnership governed by the Declaration on Allied Interaction signed in 2022, which covers political, economic, and security cooperation. This settlement underscores the commitment of both nations to resolving complex technical and military incidents through high-level diplomatic channels and mutual legal assistance, ensuring regional stability and the continuity of civil aviation safety protocols.
