Alexey Likhachev, the Director General of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, has issued a critical statement regarding the escalating military conflicts in the Middle East. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Likhachev emphasized that the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Iran is under direct threat due to the current regional instability.
The Russian official stated that ongoing military operations in the region are significantly compromising the security of the facility. "There is a real threat to the station. Explosions are being heard just a few kilometers away from the site. In response to the situation, approximately 100 individuals have already been evacuated from the area," Likhachev noted. He added that while the core staff continues to perform their duties, there are plans to evacuate an additional 200 personnel if conditions allow. Official Tehran has also issued warnings regarding the potential for the conflict to expand into a global crisis.
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, located on Iran's Persian Gulf coast, is the first civilian nuclear power plant in the Middle East, built with significant technical assistance from Russia's Rosatom. The facility is a cornerstone of Iran's energy infrastructure, and any disruption or damage to the site raises international concerns regarding nuclear safety and environmental hazards. The current warnings come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, which have increasingly seen proximity strikes near critical infrastructure.
