United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a stark warning regarding the potential negative consequences of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Secretary-General shared these concerns via his official account on the X platform.
"Restricting the right and freedom of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz causes difficulties and instability across the globe. Even in the best-case scenario, these shocks will be felt for months—with developing nations suffering the most. The world needs a full ceasefire, with the right and freedom of navigation restored in accordance with international law," he stated.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint, serving as a vital artery for global energy supplies. Approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through this narrow waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any geopolitical tension or military escalation in this region historically triggers immediate volatility in global energy markets, directly impacting inflation rates and supply chain stability for economies worldwide.
