Concerns regarding the violation of human rights have been raised at the United Nations.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made these remarks during his speech at the opening session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

According to Reuters, the Secretary-General highlighted that human rights are under attack globally and international law is being widely violated. He specifically noted the suffering of civilian populations in Sudan, the Gaza Strip, and Ukraine. Guterres emphasized that the "rule of law is being undermined by the use of force" and that human rights are being intentionally ignored. He urged member states not to treat international human rights legislation as an optional choice.

The Secretary-General stated that the UN remains a firm defender of the human rights system but added that the system is currently in "survival mode" due to funding cuts, attacks on independent experts, and the withdrawal of the United States from one of the key accountability mechanisms. The UN Human Rights Council, established in 2006, serves as the primary intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and addressing situations of human rights violations.
