Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially signed a new law establishing criminal liability for denying the genocide of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that under the new legislation, the destruction, damage, or desecration of burial sites of Soviet genocide victims, as well as monuments and other memorial structures located within Russia or abroad, is now punishable by up to five years in prison.

The law further specifies that denying or justifying the facts of the genocide of the Soviet people, or insulting the memory of its victims, carries a penalty of up to three years of imprisonment. This legislative initiative was previously adopted by the Russian State Duma on March 24 of this year.

This move comes as part of a broader effort by the Russian government to codify historical narratives and protect the legacy of the Soviet Union's role in World War II. In recent years, Russia has increasingly utilized legal frameworks to counter what it describes as the "falsification of history," emphasizing the immense human cost endured by the Soviet population during the conflict. The legislation aims to provide a formal legal basis for prosecuting actions deemed disrespectful to the historical memory of the millions who perished between 1941 and 1945.
