On March 5, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, chaired a meeting of the Security Council to address recent provocations and security threats against the state. During the session, the head of state delivered a comprehensive speech addressing a series of aggressive actions attributed to Iran, including a recent drone attack on the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev strongly condemned the strikes, which targeted civilian infrastructure including Nakhchivan International Airport, a school, and other non-military facilities. "The Azerbaijani state resolutely condemns this heinous act of terror. Those responsible must be immediately brought to justice," the President stated. He further demanded an official explanation and apology from Iranian officials, emphasizing that the Ministry of Defense and other specialized forces have been placed on high alert to prepare necessary retaliatory measures.
The President drew parallels between the current escalation and previous hostile acts, specifically recalling the armed attack on Azerbaijan's embassy in Tehran. He noted that despite Azerbaijan's consistent policy of not allowing its territory to be used against neighboring states, it continues to face smear campaigns and physical aggression. "Those who wish to test our strength saw their heads crushed by the 'Iron Fist' during the liberation of our lands. This incident will yield the same result," President Ilham Aliyev warned, adding that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has summoned the Iranian ambassador to deliver a formal note of protest.
The Security Council is the primary deliberative body in Azerbaijan responsible for coordinating national security, defense, and foreign policy. Such emergency meetings are typically convened during periods of heightened regional tension to synchronize the activities of the Ministry of Defense, the State Security Service (SSS), and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).
