Azer Ismayil oglu Mursaqulov has been appointed as the new chairman of the State Statistics Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev signed the relevant decree regarding the appointment on Wednesday.

Prior to this appointment, Mursaqulov served as the director of the State Agency for Management of Public Debt and Financial Liabilities under the Ministry of Finance since 2019. He succeeds Tahir Budagov, who was relieved of his duties at the committee and appointed as the head of the Nasimi District Executive Power by a separate presidential decree. Mursaqulov, born in 1981, is a graduate of Bogazici University in Turkiye and holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Georgia in the United States. His professional background includes serving as an advisor to the Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) headquarters in Washington D.C. between 2010 and 2012, as well as various senior roles within the Ministry of Finance and membership on the Board of the Azerbaijan Investment Holding.

The State Statistics Committee is the central executive body responsible for the collection, processing, and dissemination of official statistical data regarding the social, economic, and demographic situation in Azerbaijan. The committee plays a vital role in national planning and policy-making by providing objective data to government agencies and international organizations. This leadership change comes as Azerbaijan continues to modernize its digital data infrastructure and align its national statistical reporting with international standards to ensure transparency in the country's growing economy.
