Ten European Union member states currently receive natural gas from Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev said on April 22 during his speech at the Azerbaijan-Latvia business forum held in Baku. The head of state emphasized that while demand for natural gas has always existed, it has significantly increased over the past few years and months. Azerbaijan's strategic plan involves increasing both production and exports to meet this rising demand.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev noted that the reach of Azerbaijani gas continues to expand. “Today, 10 members of the European Union receive natural gas from Azerbaijan. The total number of countries is 16, and we rank first in the world in this indicator,” the President stated. He further clarified that although Azerbaijan is not the largest producer or exporter globally compared to some major players, it leads in terms of supply geography among countries exporting gas via pipelines.
Azerbaijan has emerged as a key partner in diversifying Europe's energy supplies, particularly through the Southern Gas Corridor. This massive infrastructure project, which includes the development of the Shah Deniz gas field and a network of pipelines, aims to enhance the energy security of the European market. The Azerbaijan-Latvia business forum serves as a platform to strengthen bilateral economic ties and explore new opportunities for cooperation in various sectors, including energy, logistics, and trade between the two nations.
