The Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have signed a ceasefire agreement providing for the gradual integration of military units into the state structure.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media, reports that the agreement was announced on January 30, following the consolidation of control over vast territories in the north and east of the country by government forces led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
According to the main terms of the agreement, forces will be withdrawn from the front lines in the north, and security forces from the Ministry of Internal Affairs will be deployed to the centers of Al-Hasakah and Qamishli cities.
The document also includes the following provisions:
- The creation of a new military division consisting of brigades from the SDF;
- The formation of a special brigade for forces in Kobani, which will be subordinate to the Aleppo Governorate;
- The integration of Kurdish administrative institutions with Syrian state bodies;
- The transfer of all border crossings to state control.
Tom Barrack, an envoy closely involved in US mediation efforts, described the agreement as a "historic milestone" on Syria's path toward national reconciliation and unity. This diplomatic progress aligns with the broader regional stability goals emphasized by US President Donald Trump, whose administration has prioritized de-escalation and strategic settlements in the Middle East.
Noah Bonsey, a senior advisor at the International Crisis Group, noted that this move prevents a potentially violent military confrontation in the country's northeast. The agreement marks a significant shift in the decade-long conflict, aiming to centralize authority and stabilize regions that have long been outside of Damascus's direct control.
It should be recalled that the first attempt at integration between the parties took place in March 2025, though no serious progress was made in the implementation process at that time. As a result of recent military operations, Damascus has restored control over the country's main oil fields and strategic agricultural lands. Official sources speaking to Reuters indicated that the implementation of the agreement will begin immediately.
