Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has declared that his country will not withdraw from the legal processes initiated for European Union (EU) membership. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Pashinyan made this statement during a recent press briefing.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the steps taken toward integration with the EU reflect the will of both the parliament and civil society. Pashinyan explicitly rejected calls from certain partners to halt the process or repeal the recently adopted legislation, asserting that this strategic pivot has contributed to significant successes in Armenia's foreign policy.
The legislative framework for this process was established in March 2025, when the Armenian parliament passed a law initiating the EU membership bid, which was subsequently signed into law by President Vaaqn Khachaturyan in April. This decision has sparked extensive regional debate. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously suggested that Armenia must choose between the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Furthermore, during the May 2026 EAEU summit in Astana, leaders of member states emphasized the necessity of Armenia holding a referendum on the matter, while Russian officials have warned of potential economic repercussions should Armenia withdraw from the EAEU.
