UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the extension of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, issued a statement regarding the development.

According to the statement, Guterres views Washington's decision to prolong the truce as a positive step toward de-escalation and the strengthening of diplomatic initiatives. "This is an important step toward reducing tensions between Iran and the US and creating an essential space for diplomacy and trust-building," Dujarric noted. He added that all parties should avoid actions that could undermine the ceasefire and instead participate constructively in talks to reach a sustainable resolution.

The announcement follows a statement by US President Donald Trump on the Truth Social platform, where he confirmed the extension of the ceasefire that was previously set to expire on April 22. Despite the UN's positive reception, the move has faced criticism from Iranian officials. Mehdi Mohammadi, an advisor to the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, described the extension as a "ruse" by Washington to prepare for new military actions, stating that the US cannot dictate conditions to Tehran.

The United Nations frequently acts as a mediator in Middle Eastern conflicts to prevent large-scale regional instability. For Azerbaijan, stability in the broader region remains a strategic priority, as the country continues to develop its role as a key energy and logistics hub connecting East and West. Maintaining diplomatic channels between major global powers is seen as essential for the security of international trade routes and regional peace.
