NATO does not plan to activate the alliance's collective security mechanism following the interception of an Iranian missile over Türkiye.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Martin O'Donnell, spokesperson for NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), made this statement during an interview with Polish television. According to the spokesperson, there are currently no indications that Article 5 of the NATO Charter will be invoked. However, O'Donnell noted that Türkiye or any other member state of the alliance retains the right to initiate such a proposal if deemed necessary.

Under Article 5 of the NATO Charter, an armed attack against one member state is considered an attack against all members of the bloc, mandating that ally nations provide assistance to the party under threat. This principle of collective defense serves as the cornerstone of the alliance's security architecture. On March 5, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also confirmed that the alliance would not invoke the collective security clause regarding the flight of the Iranian missile toward Turkish territory.

The incident occurred on March 4, when an Iranian ballistic missile passed through Iraqi and Syrian airspace before being intercepted over the Mediterranean Sea near Türkiye. The projectile was neutralized by an SM-3 missile launched from the USS Oscar Austin destroyer. Debris from the destroyed missile fell in the Hatay province, located near Türkiye's border with Syria. Reports from The New York Times suggest that Iran may have been targeting the Incirlik Air Base in southern Türkiye, which hosts a significant contingent of the US Air Force.
