Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has stated that Europe has fallen into a "terrible trap" and developed a critical dependence on the United States by refusing Russian energy supplies.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Medvedev shared these views in a post on his "X" (formerly Twitter) account. He argued that the European Union, in a state of "oligophrenic frenzy" against Russia, fails to realize the dangerous situation it has created for itself.
"After all, the role of energy resource supplier will undoubtedly now be fulfilled by Washington, whom they now hate. However, the price of this 'aid' will be incomparably higher, and not just in monetary terms," Medvedev noted.
He further added that because Europe has fallen into a critical dependence on American gas, it will henceforth be forced to execute whatever instructions it receives from the United States. This shift in energy policy, according to the Russian official, significantly undermines the strategic autonomy of the European bloc.
Since the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, the European Union has implemented multiple rounds of sanctions aimed at reducing its reliance on Russian fossil fuels. While the EU has successfully diversified its energy portfolio through increased imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the U.S. and Norway, as well as expanding pipeline capacity from Azerbaijan, the transition has been accompanied by significant price volatility and structural changes in the European industrial sector.
