Liverpool FC is nearing a final agreement to secure the long-term future of French international defender Ibrahima Konate, following successful negotiations regarding a contract extension.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing reports from TEAMtalk, indicates that while the 26-year-old defender's entry into the final stages of his current deal and interest from Real Madrid had caused concern at Anfield, recent developments have shifted the situation in the club's favor. The Fenway Sports Group (FSG) management is reportedly prepared to offer a substantial salary increase to reflect Konate's status as a core member of the squad.
A pivotal factor in the progress of these talks has been the intervention of club captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender has publicly and privately advocated for Konate to remain on Merseyside, emphasizing his importance to the team's defensive structure.
"I really want him to stay. He is an important figure on the pitch and a true leader off it. In my eyes, he is a world-class center-back," Virgil van Dijk stated regarding his defensive partner.
Currently earning approximately £75,000 per week, making him one of the lower-paid regular starters, Konate is expected to see his wages rise significantly.
