The Russian government has responded sharply to NATO's designation of Russia as a "long-term threat" to Euro-Atlantic security.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti that the decision represents an aggressive step by the alliance. Peskov stated that formally declaring any party an adversary inherently escalates tensions and increases the risk of confrontation.

The Kremlin representative emphasized that such an approach compels Russia to strengthen its domestic policies, economy, and technological capabilities, while more firmly defending its national interests. Peskov further claimed that NATO has historically functioned as a military-political structure directed against the USSR and subsequently Russia, characterizing the alliance's current policy as a continuation of that trajectory.

NATO leaders, in the final declaration of their recent summit, identified Russia as the primary threat to Euro-Atlantic security. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly rejected these accusations, arguing that Western nations utilize the narrative of a threat from Moscow to justify their own military preparations and expansion.
