The official Instagram account used by former US President Barack Obama during his presidency has been compromised by unidentified individuals.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the TMZ portal, that the security breach occurred on Sunday.
According to the reports, suspicious posts and unusual content began appearing on the account, which had been inactive since the end of Obama's term. It was subsequently confirmed that these posts were the result of a hacking incident. The unauthorized user reportedly shared several posts, including an AI-generated image containing the phrase "The White House is under the control of the Shiites" written in Persian.
A representative for Meta confirmed that the account had been subjected to a cyberattack. The company stated that control over the page has since been restored and necessary security measures have been implemented to prevent further unauthorized access.
It should be noted that the last official post on Barack Obama's account was published on January 20, 2017, the final day of his presidency. The identity of the perpetrators remains unknown, and an investigation into the security breach is currently underway.
Cybersecurity incidents targeting high-profile political figures and their legacy social media accounts remain a significant concern in the digital age. Such breaches often highlight the vulnerabilities inherent in dormant accounts that may not be subject to the same rigorous security protocols as active profiles used by current government officials, including the administration of US President Donald Trump.
