The former chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Kamal Kilicdaroglu, has been sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in prison by a Turkish court.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Turkish publication "Sabah", that the verdict was delivered following a legal process regarding public statements made by the politician.
According to the report, the former CHP leader was convicted of using insulting language directed at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Legal representatives for the President argued that the remarks exceeded the boundaries of political criticism and constituted a personal attack on the head of state's dignity.
Kamal Kilicdaroglu served as the leader of the CHP, Turkey's main opposition party, for over 13 years before stepping down following the 2023 general elections. Under Turkish law, insulting the president is a criminal offense that can carry a sentence of up to four years in prison. This legal framework has been a subject of significant debate within Turkey's political landscape, often involving high-profile opposition figures and journalists.
