A state of emergency has been declared in the Canadian province of British Columbia due to the rapid spread of the "Bald Range" wildfire. The emergency measures were implemented to facilitate urgent response efforts as the blaze continues to threaten communities across the region.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the wildfire has forced thousands of residents to flee their homes. Official reports indicate that approximately 18,000 people have been evacuated so far, bringing the total number of residents displaced by wildfires across the country this season to over 20,000.
The "Bald Range" fire has now consumed more than 100 square kilometers and remains largely uncontained. British Columbia Premier David Eby described the situation as "dynamic and threatening." Firefighting crews report that the fire is spreading at an extreme rate, with flames reaching heights of hundreds of meters in some areas. The intensity of the blaze has even generated its own weather systems, including lightning, which further complicates suppression efforts.
The affected areas include the communities of Summerland and Peachland. Reports confirm that several properties have been destroyed, and emergency responders have been deployed to rescue residents trapped by rapidly shifting fire fronts.
Currently, nearly 1,500 personnel are engaged in firefighting operations, supported by international teams from Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. Authorities are actively battling over 100 active fire fronts across the province.
