As seasonal sales campaigns intensify across Azerbaijan, consumers are increasingly questioning the authenticity of price drops in major electronics retail chains. A recent investigation into the pricing strategies of prominent retailers, including Kontakt, Irshad, and Baku Electronics, reveals that many advertised discounts are the result of artificial price hikes implemented shortly before promotional periods.
According to data analyzed by the Operative Information Center-OMM, which tracked price fluctuations across six major electronics stores over a 90-day period, a significant portion of "previous prices" displayed on discount banners either never existed or were briefly inflated to make the current sale appear more substantial. Experts note that in Azerbaijan, the lack of transparent price histories on official retail websites often leaves consumers vulnerable to deceptive marketing tactics.
To assist consumers in navigating these market challenges, the Operative Information Center-OMM has identified five key indicators of a fraudulent discount. These include sudden price spikes 7-14 days prior to a campaign, the use of fictitious "original" prices that do not reflect historical sales data, and instances where a "discounted" price at one store matches the standard retail price at another. For example, a recent analysis of an Apple iPhone Air 1TB model at Irshad showed a 31% advertised discount; however, historical data indicated that the base price was artificially raised just two weeks prior, making the actual saving significantly lower than claimed.
1. Sudden price hikes before a discount
The most common tactic involves increasing a product's price 7-14 days before a campaign. Consequently, the discount percentage appears large, but the current price is actually identical to or higher than the price from months ago. This can only be detected by examining the price history.
2. Fictitious "previous prices"
Some stores never actually sell the product at the listed "previous" price. That figure is only recorded to make the discount percentage look impressive. If a product has not been sold at that price within the last 90 days, the "previous price" is considered fictitious.
3. Discounts visible only during campaign days
In a genuine discount, a product is sold at a high price for a certain period before dropping. In a fake discount, the price is already low outside of the campaign; the "discount" is simply the normal price with a promotional banner added.
4. Price parity with non-discounted competitors
A product advertised with a "40% discount" at one store may be sold at the same or lower price at another store without any promotion. This is the simplest proof that the "previous price" was inflated.
5. Hidden price histories
No electronics store in Azerbaijan displays a product's price history on its website. This lack of transparency prevents consumers from verifying discounts in real-time, necessitating the use of independent tracking tools.

The Price Tracker is a free data-journalism tool provided by the Operative Information Center-OMM. It monitors prices daily at Kontakt, Irshad, Baku Electronics, Birmarket, Soliton, and Smart Electronics, providing independent verdicts on every discount:
- REAL — The discount is genuine; the price was high for a long time and has now dropped.
- FAKE / SUSPICIOUS — The price was increased before the discount or the "previous price" is fictitious.
- INSUFFICIENT — There is not enough history to make a determination.
Consumer protection and market transparency remain central themes in Azerbaijan's economic discourse. As the country continues to modernize its retail sector, independent monitoring tools like the Price Tracker serve as a vital resource for ensuring fair trade practices and protecting the interests of citizens in the capital, Baku, and throughout the Republic of Azerbaijan.
