Italy is expelling two military attachés from the Russian embassy, citing national security concerns.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the decision on the social media platform X.
"The Italian government has decided to expel two military attachés from the Russian embassy in Italy, who were identified as being involved in espionage activities following an investigation conducted by the Rome Prosecutor's Office," Tajani stated.
Diplomatic expulsions of this nature often occur when host nations uncover intelligence-gathering operations that violate the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Such actions frequently lead to reciprocal measures from the affected country, further straining bilateral diplomatic ties. Italy, a key member of NATO and the European Union, has maintained a firm stance on security matters, particularly in the context of broader geopolitical tensions in Europe.
