The command of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is advocating for the expansion of ground operations in southern Lebanon to further secure its northern border.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Daron Kadosh, a correspondent for the Galei Tzahal army radio station, provided details on the potential escalation. According to his report, the zone currently controlled by the Israeli military in southern Lebanon extends approximately 10 kilometers from the Israeli border. Military officials argue that it is necessary to advance deeper and conduct operations in more remote settlements to significantly reduce the threat to residential areas in northern Israel.
"According to previously published data from the Israel Defense Forces, approximately 70-80% of the shelling of northern Israel by Hezbollah is carried out from areas north of the Litani River. In this regard, it remains unclear whether advancing deeper—up to the Litani district—will lead to a significant reduction in strikes. A final decision on this matter has not yet been made by the political leadership," Kadosh stated.
The current military escalation follows a period of intense regional conflict. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran, resulting in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials. In response, Iran targeted military bases of the U.S. and its allies across Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus. While a two-week ceasefire was reached between Iran and the U.S.-led coalition on April 8, tensions remain high as Hezbollah continues its involvement in the conflict.
Since Hezbollah joined the hostilities on Iran's side by targeting Israel with missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the Israel Defense Forces have consistently struck the group's infrastructure in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut. The proposed expansion of the ground operation represents a strategic shift aimed at pushing the radical group's launch capabilities further from the Israeli frontier to ensure the safety of civilians in the Galilee region.
