Tehran promises leniency for individuals involved in criminal activities during recent riots who voluntarily surrender to police

The Iranian authorities have issued a formal appeal to individuals who were allegedly deceived by various groups into committing criminal acts during the recent unrest across the country. Official Tehran stated that those who voluntarily surrender to the police will be eligible for reduced sentences and judicial leniency.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Iran's police chief, in a statement to the state broadcaster, announced a specific timeframe for those influenced by provocateurs to come forward. "A three-day period has been established for surrender; those who come forward voluntarily will receive significant mitigation in their punishment," the official noted.

This development follows reports from the Iranian police on January 13, confirming the detention of nearly 300 individuals accused of participating in riots, engaging in looting, and carrying out attacks against law enforcement officers. The Iranian government maintains that the protests are being fueled by external actors and organized groups seeking to destabilize the nation's internal security. Historically, such amnesties or calls for surrender are utilized by the Iranian judiciary during periods of civil instability to encourage a swift end to public demonstrations and to identify key organizers behind the movements.
