The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared that recent US airstrikes on several regions in the country's south constitute a clear violation of international law.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the ministry issued a written statement emphasizing that the US attacks contravene Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
The statement asserted that the strikes are directed against Iran's national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Tehran has announced that, in accordance with its right to self-defense, it is taking countermeasures against US military bases and forces located in the region, which it identifies as the source of the attacks.
Iran has also called on regional countries to prevent their territories from being used for the planning or support of attacks against Iran.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General to fulfill their responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security, and to ensure that the organizers of these attacks are held accountable.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have historically fluctuated, often centering on regional security dynamics and the presence of US military assets in the Middle East. The UN Charter, cited by Iran, serves as the foundational treaty for international relations, emphasizing the peaceful settlement of disputes and the prohibition of the threat or use of force against sovereign nations.
