South Korea's special representative for Iran, Chung Byung-ha, has held a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran to discuss maritime security and bilateral cooperation. The discussions primarily focused on ensuring the safety of South Korean vessels and personnel currently operating in the Strait of Hormuz amid rising regional tensions.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Yonhap news agency, that the meeting comes at a critical time for South Korean maritime interests. Chung Byung-ha expressed hope that diplomatic efforts would effectively end ongoing conflicts and lead to lasting peace and stability in the region. He also emphasized the importance of further developing bilateral relations between Seoul and Tehran. Foreign Minister Araghchi welcomed this stance, stating that Iran is ready to cooperate with South Korea in the specified areas.

According to Yonhap, there are currently 26 South Korean ships and 173 sailors situated in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a vital global shipping lane, serving as the primary transit point for oil exports from the Persian Gulf. Given its strategic importance, any increase in regional volatility poses significant risks to international trade and energy security. This diplomatic engagement reflects South Korea's proactive approach to safeguarding its citizens and commercial assets in one of the world's most sensitive maritime corridors.
