Iran said it had delivered the “faster, heavier and more painful” response it had promised following US attacks on oil tankers. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday morning that US bases and interests in the region had been targeted.
According to the IRGC, the attacks targeted Al Azraq Air Base in Jordan, two US destroyers carrying cruise and Aegis missiles, and two US commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf.
The IRGC naval forces also targeted two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, it said. According to a statement published by Sepah News, 10 additional vessels attempting to pass through dangerous areas of the strait under escort by the US Navy were also hit.
The IRGC separately said its aerospace forces had attacked two destroyers equipped with cruise and Aegis missiles using ballistic missiles. In Jordan, it said, maintenance hangars for US fighter jets and shelters used to house them were targeted.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday strongly condemned the US attack on five Iranian oil tankers. The ministry described the strikes as a continuation of US military aggression, a naval blockade and economic warfare against Iran, saying they constituted a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law.
Iran stressed its determination to protect the country’s sovereignty and national interests. The statement said Iran’s armed forces would not hesitate to exercise their right to self-defense against military aggression and would deliver a firm response proportionate to any attack by the enemy.
The developments recall the confrontation in the 1980s during the Iran-Iraq War known as the “Tanker War.” Reciprocal attacks on oil tankers in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz have further heightened tensions in the region.
