Subsidies play a crucial role in the development of agriculture, President Ilham Aliyev said during a meeting dedicated to agricultural issues.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the head of state emphasized that Azerbaijan is one of the unique countries globally to implement such large-scale and diverse subsidy mechanisms.

"Admittedly, there are opportunities for improvement here, and this must be done. This will also be discussed. Various concessions are provided, including discounts on fertilizers and fuel. I can say that this is applied in a very limited number of countries worldwide. Farmers are provided with methodological recommendations and all kinds of support, including preferential loans," President Ilham Aliyev stated.

The President highlighted that numerous state-led projects have given a major boost to agricultural development, pointing to the cotton industry as a prime example. Historically a major sector in the 1970s and 1980s, cotton production in Azerbaijan had previously collapsed to just 20,000 tons, with yields dropping to a maximum of one ton per hectare. However, systematic state reforms and support have revitalized the sector, driving production up to more than 360,000 tons, which has significantly benefited rural communities in specialized regions.
