President Ilham Aliyev received the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Colombia to Azerbaijan, Nelsy Raquel Munar Jaramillo, on April 14.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the ambassador presented her credentials to the head of state. President Ilham Aliyev then held a discussion with the diplomat regarding the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations.
The head of state noted that despite the geographical distance between Azerbaijan and Colombia, bilateral relations are established at a good level. President Ilham Aliyev emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation in various fields, particularly deepening ties in economy, investment, and tourism based on existing political relations. The Azerbaijani President wished the ambassador success in her diplomatic mission.
Expressing her honor at being Colombia's first female ambassador to Azerbaijan, Nelsy Raquel Munar Jaramillo stated she would work diligently to strengthen political dialogue and identify new opportunities for cooperation. The ambassador highlighted that Colombia organizes Spanish language courses in Azerbaijan to promote the language, noting with satisfaction the active participation of Azerbaijani students and specialists in these programs.
During the meeting, the parties recalled the memorandum of understanding signed last year regarding the implementation of the "ASAN service" model in Colombia. They also exchanged views on expanding relations in agriculture, demining, education, and culture. The successful cooperation within international organizations was also discussed, with both sides expressing satisfaction with their mutual support within the UN, Non-Aligned Movement, and other multilateral platforms.
Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Colombia were established in 1994. In recent years, the two nations have focused on diversifying their partnership beyond political consultations, specifically targeting energy, agriculture, and public service innovation. The adoption of the Azerbaijani "ASAN service" model by Colombia stands as a key milestone in South-South cooperation between the two republics.
