Former Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM) and a prominent figure in Turkish politics, Husamettin Cindoruk, has passed away at the age of 93.
Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Haber Global, reports that the veteran politician died in the hospital where he was receiving treatment.
Born in Izmir in 1933, Cindoruk graduated from the Ankara University Faculty of Law and practiced as a lawyer before entering politics. He began his political career with the Democrat Party, which was closed following the 1960 military coup. He later became one of the founders of the True Path Party (DYP) and served as its chairman for many years. Following the 1991 parliamentary elections, he served as the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye from 1991 to 1995. A close ally of Suleyman Demirel, Cindoruk also briefly served as acting president after Demirel was elected to the presidency.
Cindoruk was widely regarded as a cornerstone of center-right politics in Türkiye, known for his commitment to parliamentary democracy and his legal expertise during turbulent political eras. His death marks the end of an era for the generation of politicians who shaped the Turkish political landscape in the late 20th century. Official condolences have been offered by various political leaders, recognizing his long-standing service to the Turkish state and its legislative institutions.
