UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a full ceasefire between the US and Iran and the restoration of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Guterres made the statement on the X social media platform.

Guterres stated that restricting navigation rights and freedoms in and around the Strait of Hormuz creates serious challenges and instability on a global scale. "The world needs a full ceasefire and the restoration of navigation rights and freedoms in accordance with international law," the UN Secretary-General noted. He emphasized that even in the best-case scenario, the consequences of closing the Strait of Hormuz would manifest in the coming months, with developing nations likely to suffer the most.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint, serving as a vital artery for global energy supplies. Approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through this narrow waterway daily, making any disruption a significant threat to international energy security and economic stability.

Previously, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces announced a complete halt to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amid potential US strikes. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that at least two vessels attempting to transit the strait had been targeted.
