France has decided to deploy military frigates, missile systems, and anti-drone equipment to Cyprus following an Iranian "Rashid" unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack on a British military base on the island.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing official Cypriot sources, that the deployment is part of a coordinated response to the recent escalation in the region.
According to the sources, who requested anonymity, Germany has also responded positively to a request for the dispatch of naval vessels to Cyprus. The officials stated that the ships and specialized equipment are expected to arrive in Cyprus as soon as possible to bolster local defense capabilities.
The incident occurred on March 2, when a drone targeted the British Royal Air Force (RAF) base at Akrotiri, causing minor material damage. During the same day, British military aircraft successfully intercepted and neutralized two additional UAVs in the vicinity. In a related move, Greece has already deployed four F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus, with two modern frigates currently en route to the area.
The Akrotiri base serves as a critical strategic hub for British and allied operations in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. This recent escalation highlights the growing security challenges in the region, particularly regarding the proliferation of drone technology and its use against sovereign military installations. The coordinated response by France, Germany, and Greece underscores the commitment of European partners to maintaining stability and protecting key infrastructure in the Mediterranean basin.
