China has summoned the Philippine ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lodge a formal protest regarding an incident that occurred between the two nations' vessels near the Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Reuters, the ministry emphasized the gravity of the situation in an official statement released following the encounter.
The diplomatic move follows a collision in the disputed waters, after which both Beijing and Manila accused each other of provocation. Manila reported that a member of the Philippine Navy sustained injuries during the confrontation, while Beijing alleged that the Philippine side instigated the incident.
The South China Sea remains one of the world's most contested maritime regions, with overlapping territorial claims involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei. The Second Thomas Shoal, known in the Philippines as Ayungin Shoal, has frequently been a flashpoint for maritime standoffs, as both nations assert sovereignty over the area, which is strategically significant for trade routes and potential natural resource exploration.
