Two individuals placed on the international wanted list have been extradited to Azerbaijan, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan announced.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the requests filed by the Prosecutor General's Office for the extradition of Azerbaijani citizens Abulfat Ismayilzada and Amal Azizov were granted by the Ministry of Justice of Georgia. The extradition process was carried out in accordance with the Convention on Legal Assistance and Legal Relations in Civil, Family, and Criminal Matters dated January 22, 1993.
The individuals were charged under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan and had been declared internationally wanted for evading investigation. They were detained on Georgian territory and brought to Azerbaijan accompanied by a special convoy from the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice. According to official reports, the suspects were wanted in connection with a cigarette smuggling case, with investigators finding reasonable suspicion of their involvement in the illegal import of non-excised tobacco products from the United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
This extradition highlights the ongoing judicial cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia within the framework of regional legal treaties. Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its international legal partnerships to ensure that individuals accused of cross-border crimes, particularly smuggling and economic offenses, are brought to justice. The Prosecutor General's Office noted that investigative measures regarding the facts are currently ongoing in Baku.
