The European Union (EU) has requested member states to encourage citizens to reduce car usage and air travel due to the impact of ongoing developments in the Middle East on global energy supplies.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media, that Dan Jorgensen, the EU Commissioner for Energy, has sent a formal letter to the energy ministers of member states outlining the potential consequences of the regional instability.
In the communication, Jorgensen urged governments to consider voluntary measures aimed at reducing energy demand, particularly within the transport sector. The letter emphasized the importance of prioritizing fuel for essential industries and encouraged national authorities to promote behavioral changes among the public, such as driving less and opting for fewer flights. The EU official expressed concern that the situation in the Middle East could escalate into a global energy supply crisis, stressing the necessity for governments to prepare for long-term disruptions.
Furthermore, the directive highlighted that member states should avoid actions that could increase fuel consumption, restrict the free movement of petroleum products, or weaken the output of refineries within the EU. To address these challenges, EU energy ministers are scheduled to hold a video conference today to discuss coordinated strategic measures against the looming energy crisis.
