Students’ reading comprehension results in some regions are having a significant impact on Azerbaijan’s overall performance.
"Operative Information Center-OMM" reports that Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev made the remarks during a presentation of the PISA 2025 results. The minister said it was concerning that approximately 80-88% of students in some regions failed to reach the minimum reading literacy benchmark.
“In some regions, reading comprehension results are low for around 80% of students. There are also figures approaching 88%. The remaining regions account for a smaller share. Baku, Absheron-Khizi and other regions make up the larger proportion. Therefore, these results affect the overall indicator. We need to work extensively in these regions. We have also seen certain results related to this issue in teacher certification examinations. It is essential to work with teachers in those regions,” the minister added.
Emin Amrullayev stressed the importance of paying particular attention to improving education indicators in regions such as Lankaran-Astara, Mil-Mughan, Salyan and Masalli. He said regional results make long-standing problems in education more visible and demonstrate the need for systematic measures in this area.
PISA, organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, assesses 15-year-old students’ reading, mathematics and science skills. Its results are used internationally to compare education systems and identify areas requiring improvement.
