Negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan are scheduled to commence in China on April 1.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing TOLO News, that the high-level discussions will take place in Urumqi. The meeting follows a period of heightened military friction along the border regions, with both nations seeking a diplomatic path to ease recent hostilities.

The diplomatic initiative comes after a significant escalation on February 26, when Afghanistan launched military operations against Pakistani forces along the Durand Line—a boundary not recognized by Kabul. This move was a response to airstrikes conducted by the Pakistani Air Force within Afghan territory. In turn, Pakistan reported returning fire and characterized the situation as a state of high military alert. Although a five-day ceasefire was observed starting March 18 in honor of the month of Ramadan, tensions remained high, with reports of airspace violations occurring shortly after the truce expired on March 24.

The involvement of China as a mediator underscores Beijing's growing role in regional security and its interest in maintaining stability within the neighborhood. The Durand Line, established in 1893, remains a primary source of contention between the two countries, frequently leading to border skirmishes and diplomatic disputes. This upcoming meeting in Urumqi is viewed by regional analysts as a critical attempt to establish a sustainable communication channel and prevent further cross-border military escalations.
