Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has issued a serious warning to Washington, declaring that the Kingdom of Denmark has insurmountable "red lines" regarding its sovereignty. Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing The Guardian, that the diplomat called on all parties who believe in international law to demonstrate to US President Donald Trump that his current path is incorrect.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that Denmark, along with the rest of Europe, will respond with a unified position to the tariff threats imposed by the United States. According to Rasmussen, although Denmark, Greenland, and the US agreed last week to move discussions from social media to the negotiating table, the recent statements from the White House leader have significantly undermined this process.
The diplomat noted that at this juncture, it is critically important for the European Union and its allies to protect the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. He stated that while US President Donald Trump may have his own vision, he will never achieve his goals by exerting pressure on Copenhagen. On January 17, US President Donald Trump announced the implementation of customs duties against several European countries in connection with the situation surrounding Greenland.
The dispute over Greenland has resurfaced as a significant geopolitical flashpoint, reflecting the island's growing strategic importance due to its vast natural resources and its location in the Arctic. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and while it manages its domestic affairs, its foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen. The recent tension highlights a deepening rift in transatlantic relations as European leaders seek to maintain regional stability against shifting US foreign policy priorities.
