The aftermath of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10 remains severe. According to the latest official reports, the death toll from the natural disaster has risen to 331.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, according to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), 4,439 people have been injured, and 240 remain missing. Rescue teams have successfully pulled 364 survivors from the rubble.
In response to the widespread destruction caused by the earthquake, the Colombian government has declared a state of economic, social, and ecological emergency. President Abelardo de la Espriella announced the creation of the "Miracle Fund" to finance the reconstruction process. The primary objective of the fund is to allocate resources for the restoration of damaged hospitals, schools, residential buildings, roads, and airports.
The government has also developed support programs for families affected by the earthquake. Starting August 26, financial aid in the amount of 875,452 pesos will be provided to families whose homes were completely destroyed or rendered uninhabitable.
President De la Espriella stated that the reconstruction effort will extend beyond simply rebuilding destroyed structures. According to the President, the goal is to create safer and more resilient living spaces while simultaneously fostering new employment opportunities.
