The death toll from a powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in central China's Hunan Province has risen to 37, local authorities confirmed. The incident occurred at a workshop belonging to the Huasheng fireworks company on Monday, leading to a massive emergency response in the region.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Xinhua news agency, one person remains missing while 51 others sustained various injuries. Search and rescue operations at the site have largely been concluded as investigators begin to assess the cause of the blast and the extent of the damage to the surrounding area.
Industrial accidents, particularly in the fireworks manufacturing sector, have historically prompted stringent safety reviews in China. Hunan Province is a major hub for fireworks production, an industry that often sees increased activity and production pressure ahead of major national festivals. Following this tragedy, regional officials are expected to launch comprehensive safety inspections across similar production facilities to ensure compliance with national safety standards and prevent further loss of life.
