The Czech Republic's national energy operator, ČEPS, intends to purchase natural gas from Azerbaijan as part of Prague's strategic efforts to diversify its energy sources. The move highlights the growing energy partnership between the two nations as European countries seek reliable alternatives for their energy security.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala made these remarks during a joint press statement with President Ilham Aliyev. Highlighting the potential for future cooperation, the Prime Minister noted that Azerbaijan is steadily increasing its gas production. "The head of our energy company is with us today, and we would be very pleased if we could sign a long-term contract with Azerbaijan regarding gas supplies," the Prime Minister stated.
Azerbaijan has become an increasingly vital energy partner for the European Union, particularly following the completion of the Southern Gas Corridor. This infrastructure allows Azerbaijan to export natural gas directly to European markets, contributing to the continent's energy diversification goals. The potential agreement with Czechia aligns with the broader strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the EU, which aims to significantly increase gas deliveries to Europe in the coming years to ensure regional energy stability.
