South Korea and the United States are set to commence large-scale joint military exercises next week, aimed at bolstering their collective defense posture.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the Yonhap news agency, military officials confirmed the upcoming maneuvers.

The "Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS)" exercises, designed to enhance overall defense readiness, are scheduled to take place from August 17 to 27. These annual drills are widely viewed as a critical component of the allies' preparations to counter potential threats from North Korea in emergency scenarios.

The UFS exercises serve as a vital testing ground for the transition of wartime operational control (OPCON) from Washington to Seoul. This process allows the allies to evaluate South Korea's capability to lead combined forces effectively. Such military cooperation remains a cornerstone of the US-South Korea security alliance, which has been a stabilizing factor in the Asia-Pacific region for decades, particularly as tensions on the Korean Peninsula fluctuate in response to North Korea's nuclear and missile development programs.
